November Issue

About the Sentinel

Congratulations! You’ve successfully found yourself a copy of the senior newspaper: The Senior Sentinel! We would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about it.
The Senior Sentinel was created by five students in Mrs. Cook and Mr. Garritano’s 6th and 7th grade classes. We wanted to be able to share our creativity and love for writing by telling about school news. After many meetings and emails, we got everything in order, and we had a clear plan in mind…then we began the crazy writing. We chose some personal columns to write every two weeks as well as an additional article about school news.
We’d like to introduce you to the Senior Sentinel committee:

            Nicole
            Raelene
           Makayla
            Taylor
            Brooke
           Jasmine

If you ever have any questions for us, we will be more than happy to answer them!
Newspapers cost 25 cents an issue and we will set them out every other Friday at lunch time. Thank you, and have a wonderful day! J

Marble Track Mayhem
By Raelene

The marble track races were very exciting and full of suspense. I know all of my marbles were on the track from Mrs. Cook’s class, but the other track was great as well. Both tracks were very fast and an insider commented, “The race was so close, it was insane!”
Both tracks did a great job, and we thank Mr.  Garritano for all of his help!
Now we are competing for the slowest track and some are saying this will be harder than building a fast one! “It definitely makes you think more,” an insider commented.
Who will win the marble track showdown? We’ll have to wait and see.

Minne's Fashions of the Week

Looking over my fellow classmates, I’ve noticed that we have many different fashions at our school besides uniforms. The trick is: accessories! If you are needing accessory help, don’t worry—I’ve got your back.
Some of the common things I have been seeing is students wearing a lot of bracelets and earrings. Another thing I have noticed is that the color purple is really popular! Some say that sporting purple accessories will get you some great compliments.
Skirts are becoming popular for girls as well. We would like to remind you now that wearing skirts more that three inches above the knee is unacceptable. It is a school rule.
Headbands and multi-colored socks are also a common fad. These accessories are a great way to show your personality.
As you can see, uniforms aren’t that bad…you just need to accessorize! Show tour personality through you accessories, but just remember it has to be school appropriate!

Creating a Kind Environment

By Brooke
Bullying in elementary schools is becoming more and more common, and students are getting comfortable with being unkind to others. When two seniors at Molalla River Academy heard this, they immediately got to work on making sure our school doesn’t fall into the hands of bullying.
They named their program C.A.K.E, which stands for “Creating a Kind Environment”. They have been traveling around to some of the classrooms and giving presentations on bullying prevention and keeping unkindness as far away from our school as possible.
“Our goal is to would probably be to have a lower bullying rate than most schools,” on of the girls says, “We want our school to be a fun and safe place to learn.”
Though this program is more focused on younger children, these girls don’t hesitate to tell their classmates about it as well.
“We try to share it with the older children too,” one says, “If we could teach to only one class, we would probably teach the older students because they can set an example.”
In some classrooms, their logo is found hanging on the wall to remind the students how to treat each other. They say that their program goes along with the shield hierarchy our school has created, and it focuses a lot on getting to the Democracy level.
These girls ask that as a student at MRA, that you try your best to remember to create a kind environment wherever you go.

LETTERS  TO BROOKE
an advice column

“Dear Brooke,
As the school year goes on, I find myself falling farther and farther behind in schoolwork. I have always been the kind of student who is caught up on everything, but lately, I have been falling behind. How can I get caught up and stay caught up?”

--Sinking in Schoolwork
Dear Sinking,
You have a case on your hands that students have been facing for years. The first step to catching up is to R-E-L-A-X. The more you stress about what you have to do, the less you will do. I also suggest these tips:

1. Prioritize.
Unfamiliar with this word? Well, to prioritize is to put the things that you have to do in order from most important to least important. For example: if you have math due tomorrow, and a spelling test on Friday, you would do the math first, yes?

2. Don’t Procrastinate!
To procrastinate is to put things off until the last minute. Sinking, avoid this at all costs! We have all fallen into the metaphorical net of procrastination before, and you must get out of there right away! Always remind yourself that if you get the work done now, you will have more time to relax later.

Sinking, I really hope this helps. Also, talk to your teachers and you two can set up a plan together. I know that if you do so respectfully that they will be willing to help. I hate to say this, but as the school year goes on, the more work we will have. Get out of that net as soon as possible.
Yours,
Brooke

Fanning: Our Futures
By Taylor
Who is Mr. Fanning? Mr. Fanning, as most of you know, became our new principal here at MRA over the summer when Mrs. Mack went to Taiwan, but you probably don’t know much about him.
Mr. Fanning brings over 30 years of experience to the educational field, 10 of which have been spent teaching, along with 20 years of administrative experience.
Before Mr. Fanning arrived at our school, he was building a house with his wife, Kathy, in Imnaha, Oregon. It was almost complete when they decided to move closer to their family here in the Willamette valley. He has two grandchildren; Tristan, who is starting kindergarten, and Reece, who isn’t in elementary school yet. These two children live with their parents here in the valley.
Mr. Fanning had the chance to visit Tennessee and Alabama, and he also has family in Florida. One day he hopes to be able to visit Vancouver B.C. Canada. With this adventure, Mr. Fanning will create an abundance of memories.
Mr. Fanning has a few goals for our school. He would like to improve OAKS testing scores: this means the scores from last year could have been better. Second, Mr. Fanning would like everyone to treat the school with respect. Third, he would like the transition from the gym to the Quonset hut for the 6th and 7th graders to be as smooth as possible.
With this being Mr. Fanning’s first year at MRA, let’s welcome him with hard work, dedication, and respect for him, each other and our school.

Riddles:

A billionaire offered three men a challenge. “The man who can fill this room with something using the least amount of money will win a million dollars. The first man spent $25 and filled it with lots of air filled balloons. The second man spent $250 dollars and filled it with a single giant air-filled balloon. The third man spent nothing and won the million dollars. What did he do?

What word becomes shorter even when you add 2 letters to it?
