Recess Football
By Jasmine

Recently, there has been some commotion during lunchtime. Some kids have been pulling peoples’ shirts and knocking people down on the football field.
According to Mr. Fanning, there haven’t been too many injuries. He said a couple of kids do something every once in a while, but nothing serious enough to stop it from happening. If anything is rough at recess, it’s the soccer field, which is still not hazardous yet.
Some kids have been told that the football field was getting “shut down”. The true story is that football will still be taking place at recess as long as everybody takes part in following the rules. Just to remind everyone, here are he rules:
                        • Respect each other
                        • Respect football materials
                        • No tackle football
                        • No ripping clothing
                        • No yelling at other students
                        • No harming other students in any way
                        • PLAY SAFE!

Remember, if you follow the rules, you will still get to play football at recess. If you don’t like how someone is playing, please tell an adult.

Catching Fire and Tangled Named Best in 2010
By Brooke

As 2010 wraps up, the best books and movies of the past year come out.
According to the American Library Association (The ALA) Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins was named the best book and the best sequel. This book comes from the trilogy dubbed The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, a young teenage girl growing up in the harsh conditions of a futuristic North America. As a reminder of the rebellion that took place years ago, once a year one boy and one girl from each district are sent to participate in the annual games: a fight to the death on live television. Stephen King (Entertainment Weekly) said the following about this book.
"The Hunger Games is a violent, jarring, speed-rap of a novel that generates nearly constant suspense...I couldn't stop reading."

The ALA also pointed out the best Disney/Pixar movie, and their vote was Tangled, directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. In this movie, a modern-day twist on the original fairytale comes out. Rapunzel is a dreamer, a painter, and she wants very badly to be able to visit the kingdom. Her partner in her many adventures is Flynn Rider, the handsome prince who, according to himself, is very charming. Georgie Robbs (Movie Critic) says: “It’s no whole new world, but with mostly smart lyrics and colorful characters, Disney’s definitely back in business.”

P.E.: New Year, New Goals
By Taylor

Lara McLaughlin joined the MRA staff this past fall and has since been helping students incorporate exercise into their life.
“I was attracted to MRA because of all the energy and spirit brought on by the students,” Ms. McLaughlin said. “The students are motivated, athletic and just great to work with.”
In her free time when she isn’t teaching or being a personal trainer, Ms. McLaughlin likes to run trails, ski, kayak, hike, and almost any other outdoor activity. She also enjoys cooking for her family and taking naps.
At the beginning of the school year in P.E. Ms. McLaughlin was working on getting everyone moving, but there wasn’t much trouble with that. Now, she is going to focus more on teamwork and staying positive while still keeping the first goal in mind.
The most important thing about exercising is that you have to like what you’re doing. If you don’t like running, try curl-ups, you can do that first. If you don’t like curl-ups, try push-ups, and so on and so forth. Keep trying to find something about exercising that you like. Chances are there is something out there that you will actually enjoy.
The number one thing to remember is to have a good time. If you’re not having a good time, there is always a way to at least enjoy exercising whether you realize it or not.
Exercise is important, if you choose not to, that is your personal opinion. If you do choose to exercise, you will be a great deal happier.

LETTERS TO BROOKE

Dear Brooke,

Two people at school are being mean to me, and I don’t know what to do. We used to all be very close, but since I stopped being their friend, it seems like they are trying to ruin my school life. Help me, please!

~Help Me!

~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~

Dear Help Me,

It is always sad when friendships fall apart. I’m so sorry that this happened.
It is also very said that these friends are trying to “ruin your life.” I am assuming that this means that they are embarrassing you or making you feel upset. Their behavior, though not acceptable, is understandable. They are probably worried and confused about this friendship ending, and from your letter, it sounds that you were all once very close. They are most likely treating you this way because they are angry. Unfortunately, there isn’t anything you can do about that. You control you, not them. We can’t help it if someone else gets angry at us. However, since you can control you, all you can do is try to treat them nicely! I know that you must be angry too, but being angry back at them will just make the problem bigger. Try to be kind to them, and if at all possible, try to mend that friendship. Good luck!

Minnie’s Fashions for the Week!

Welcome back from that long winter break, everyone! I want to take a moment to thank everybody for buying the last issue, and we hope you liked it! I’m sorry the last fashion article didn’t get put into the last issue, a small mistake.

Girls:
That fashions I’ve seen around the school are still a lot of purple accessories. But because we just had the holidays, I’ll bet everyone’s come back with something new.
Skirts are still a common fad, and lately I’ve noticed many girls sporting multi-colored tights to go along with them! Bracelets and scarves have also been a popular trend.
Many colored headbands have been sported, I’ve seen more red than I ever have ever seen at this school (and that’s saying something).
Make sure that you bring a jacket to school, because we are in for a cold winter, and these are snowy months.

Boys:
Shorts have been very common these days for boys. Shorts, shorts, shorts, and more shorts! I’m kind of surprised because it’s so cold outside, but they don’t seem to care about the temperature.

Thanks for reading and I hope you liked it and found it helpful! Make sure that if you can’t find your coat to check the lost and found. It’s packed with them!

Thanks! If you have any suggestions, email us a new_chick12@yahoo.com

Answers to last issue’s riddles

    1) Computer Security

Mike worked at a high security institution. He tried to log into his computer and the computer denied the password. He then remembered that the passwords to the computers were reset every month for security reasons. He called his boss for his new password.
Mike then said, "George, my old password is out of date."
George said, "Yes, it is. The new password is different, but if you listen closely you will be able to figure out the new one. Your new password has the same amount of letters as the old one, and four of the letters are the same."
Mike then logged into his computer with no trouble. What was the new password? What was his old?
His old password was “out of date”, and his new password is “different”.

    2) A Ping-Pong Ball in a Hole

Your last good ping-pong ball fell down into a narrow metal pipe imbedded in concrete one foot deep.
How can you get it out undamaged, if all the tools you have are your tennis paddle, your shoe-laces, and your plastic water bottle, which does not fit into the pipe?
You fill the pipe with water from the water bottle and the ball will float to the surface.

    3) Sheikh's Inheritance

An Arab sheikh tells his two sons to race their camels to a distant city to see who will inherit his fortune. The one whose camel is slower wins. After wandering aimlessly for days, the brothers ask a wise man for guidance. Upon receiving the advice, they jump on the camels and race to the city as fast as they can.
What did the wise man say to them?
The man told them to switch camels.
